In this seminar we will discuss emerging and reemerging viruses which have resulted in significant disease outbreaks in various human populations. We will discuss the basic virology of the viruses involved, the principles of epidemiology as they relate to outbreaks, and the methods used to identify the causative viruses as well as what is done to control outbreaks and prevent future ones. The course will use some basic reading material, a video presentation and will require brief student presentations of viral outbreaks which have occurred recently.
