The seminar "Living on the Edge" will deal with extremophilic microorganisms, which trrive in environments normally considered hostile to survival. Such environments include extremely hot environments (e.g. hot springs or ocean ridge black smoker), extremely saline environments (e.g. Dead Sea), or even outer space environments (e.g. Martian soil or comets). The seminar will be held on two afternoons and will include an introduction to the topic based on most recent scientific publications, a number of related movie materials and an on-site trip to a laboratory specialized in microbiology.
