The New York Times (NYT) newspaper maintains a web-site with "Science" and "Health" sections that contain recent and archived articles on diverse aspects of modern science, e.g. anthropology, biology, behavior, music, medicine, healthcare, forensics, viruses, bioengineering, ecology, computers and education. Each week students review the 'Science' and 'Health' sections of the New York Times online resource to identify an article that they find of interest. To prepare for class, students read the article and perform any additional background research necessary to put the NYT article in context using online resources (e.g. Google, Wikipedia). The NYT website also offers free pod-casts of articles that can be listened to on a computer. During class, students lead a general discussion of the article they have chosen. Why would I want to take this course ? The objectives of this class are (a) to make you more informed about current topics in Science and or Healthcare; (b) to help you identify a topic that is of general interest to you, which you may pursue as a career choice; (c) to improve your skills of critical thinking, analysis and presentation, and (d) to make you more comfortable about talking in public.
