Class will meet for a total of of 10 hours. Some will be 2 hours where we watch movies (Creator, Jurassic Park III, GATTACA) and others will be 1 hour where we discuss the movies or short stories containing themes of Genetics and Molecular Biology. In total we will read 5-6 short stories from one book ("Beaker's Dozen" by Nancy Kress: available from online book retailers such as Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/002-8662991-5160813). These are fun and fast moving stories with plenty of room for interpretation, speculation, and ideas. We will focus our discussions on how the authors/film maker(s) draw upon key themes in Molecular Biology to twist their plots and interject their own ideas for how we should use the awesome power of Molecular Genetics to shape the future of Mankind.
